Just got the new book from Studio on Fire in the mail! It’s beautiful and filled with amazing letterpress work from their amazing print studio. The book’s cover is letterpressed, too. There are some designs by Studio on Fire and also some projects that they’ve printed for other people. My split fountain wedding invitation for Mariko and Mark is also in the book! You can see more about the book here.
Inspiration: Justin Fuller

Denver Music Company, images and text from pencilpluspaper.com

•

Description from Justin Fuller:

“Denver Music Company is a fictional / pop-up record store that was created as an installation for Create Denver Week in April of 2010. The project aimed to highlight the unique history of the music scene in Denver and the Front Range of Colorado. Everything was created from scratch, including the logo, the storefront, several silkscreened prints to decorate the shop, a 50-page zine, buttons, stickers and record bin labels. An interactive listening station allowed people to hear a variety of music created by Colorado artists over the years.”

The props to create this installation are really great. Everything is adorned with hand drawn typography.

“A record bin was filled with more than 150 vintage and new vinyl LPs by local artists or artists / albums that had a significant connection to the area.”

Justin silkscreened genre labels and 12” x 12” posters… Some of which were for sale during the show.

“Center Channel: A Totally Incomplete History of Colorado Music” was distributed for free in front of the store. His 50-page zine went quick (the photo of the storefront had an empty rack!)…

Inspiration: Hanna Sandin

•

I’m head over heels for Hanna Sandin, a 28-year-old Brooklyn based artist and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (2003). She makes jewelry out of perfect shapes and sculpture from imperfect objects. Hanna’s mobiles have a taste of Calder and are playfully fragmented. Her website isn’t up yet, but some of her images are on http://dossierjournal.com. Take a look at her jewelry at www.sammasamma.com

An article on Hanna in Elle magazine revealed an unexpected story— Hanna’s jewelry began from a robbery.

“When her apartment was burgled and all her valuables and jewelry were stolen, she began stringing materials from her studio around her neck as a method of temporary adornment.”

I love how a fluke has turned into something so beautiful and off-beat.

•

Hanna’s mobiles feel quick and yet alluring… I wish I could sit on the floor and watch them in person. Watch out for her website, hopefully it’ll be up soon. http://www.hannasandin.com/

Before we moved out of our Bolton Hill apartment in Baltimore, I took some photographs, I’m going to start by sharing the Studio.

I think I may miss this room the most! Above is my sunny studio desk. As I look now, I put up a lot of red things. Funny fake fireplace and mantel. I can’t wait to build nice shelves for Willem’s toy collection in our new home (I’ll have to take better photographs!)

My sister brought back the little smoking man (opens up to burn honey incense cones) from a Weihnachtsmarkt in Germany, I got the Brooch book when I visited the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and Sarah gave me the Inuit Art Birds book.

My absolute favorites of our little toys sit on my widow sill. I made the cupcake and vanilla layer cake. Many of our toys came from our visit to Japan. All of the ones in the second picture did.

Sometimes the parts of a project end up being nice things in themselves (this is a film from shooting a silk-screen).

It was so nice to have a bright, big workspace. This room had a table for myself, a table for a friend (or to paint and get messy), and a clean table to rip/cut paper and mock up projects. I can’t wait to find another sunny spot and build an even better studio!

…

Our old apartment in Bolton Hill - Living room:

Willem’s toy collection spreads throughout the house. The second photograph are all toys from japan, some of them vintage (1960s china). The beautiful bird belonged to his grandmother, who gave it to us.

…

The bedroom was so large it doubled as a workspace for Willem and even a studio to make my jewelry (clockwork.juliakostreva.com).

Like most of our furniture, we picked Willem’s desk up off the street. It was over 200 pounds, and we had to take all of the doors off the hinges to fit it in! You just don’t find nice wood furniture like that too often. Hah, I just noticed a very floppy Totoro on my messy desk (made by dear friend Shannon May!). The big letterpress Posters are from Yee-Haw Industries.

Some of my favorite nooks in the bedroom (other rooms in the apartment to follow this post):

Letterpress perpetual calendar by orange beautiful, self-promotional letterpress coaster, embroidered house by my friend becca stadtlander. Intaglio prints from student selling at the MICA Art Market. I’m embarrassed that I don’t actually eat them, but I love fortune cookies.
